  1. The way Erin learned her lesson, as well as the lesson she learned, was a very typical lessen of the superhero minded American aid worker. Most people who travel out of the country to serve in some way are not prepared for how far below their own personal standards, or the standards they are used to, the quality of the work being done is. As well, Erin had to learn why the woman had slept-they were afraid of being raped. Just like many foreigners before her, once she understood the whole reason why something was happening, they realized how powerless they, and the nationals involved, are to change a very broken system.
